What Are Wet Dreams?

If you wake up in the middle of the night with a wet spot in your underwear, it doesn't mean that you wet the bed. It's still pretty embarrassing, and you probably have no idea what just happened or what it means. Most of all, you're probably wondering if it's normal.

In fact, what has happened is that you have had a wet dream. Wet dreams are completely normal, though not every teenage male will have them, and have no bad effects or mean anything is wrong. They are sometimes called nocturnal discharges. Basically, this means that you ejaculate while you are sleeping and having a dream that is usually of sexual nature. Sometimes, it happens without dreaming at all.

It's fairly common to wake up during a wet dream, and catch yourself in the middle of ejaculating. However, it is still pretty common to sleep right through the dream and not discover anything until the next morning.

Wet dreams happen when a teenage boy hits puberty, and his body starts making more testosterone, which is the male hormone. This can't be stopped, and wet dreams are not voluntary; they'll happen whether you want them to or not. Sometimes wet dreams continue into adulthood, though this is not usually the case.

Sometimes, wet dreams will contain sexual material that is more explicit than usual: public sex, group sex, incest, rape, or even sex with animals. Having these dreams doesn't mean that you actually want to do these things, it is simply a jumble of thoughts mashed together. Having this sort of content in a wet dream is not a bad thing, it is simply your subconscious acting up.

Girls can also experience wet dreams, but they are not as easily noticed because girls do not ejaculate. Wet dreams are usually attributed to either sexual frustration (i.e. a long period without intercourse in older men) or stress, as ejaculation releases endorphins in the brain, which help a person relax.

Many people think that having a wet dream is morally wrong, and they feel guilty about having them. Wet dreams are simply a reaction to increased hormone levels, and can't be controlled. They do not mean that you are sexually deviant or perverted, nor are they something to feel guilty about. It is a common belief that drugs or alcohol could bring on wet dreams, but research has proven this to be untrue.

One last note: having heterosexual or homosexual wet dreams does not necessarily mean that you are homo- or heterosexual. Likewise, having a wet dream about a family member or elder does not mean that you are attracted to them either. Wet dreams are simply a way of letting off a little steam, so to speak, to relax the body and release some sexual tension.
